About Quilters of the Round Table

The Quilters of the Round Table  (QRT) quilting guild was formed in April 1993 after the first African American Quilters Conference was held in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and became a chapter of the now defunct National Association of African American Quilters (NAAAQ).  QRT adopted the National Association’s logo, the  North Star, and the motto, ‘Each One, Teach One’ as symbols of commitment to promote the contributions of African Americans to the quilting art form.

QRT’s goals are to create, stimulate, maintain and record all matters pertaining to the making, collecting and preservation of quilts., and to establish and promote educational endeavors through quilting by and for African Americans as well as other quilters.

Current membership is approximately 40 women.  The quilting proficiency levels range from novice to expert.  Monthly meetings provide workshops for various quilting and quilting-related patterns, techniques and problem solving.  Quilting assistance is available for Guild members.

QRT members have attended and exhibited at quilt shows in Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, California, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.  Many have been awarded prizes and recognition for creativity and expertly made quilts.  Guild members have participated in activities and demonstrations at the  Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and various other venues.  Guild exhibits have been mounted at the Free Library of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania State Capital Rotunda, the Community College of Philadelphia, and  the African American Museum of Philadelphia.
